Emily Berry is the Director of the Iowa Office of Consumer Affairs at NAMI Iowa and is a certified Peer Support Specialist. Before working for NAMI Iowa, Emily worked as a direct care professional with adults and children with mental illness and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities. She has her bachelor’s degree in Human Services with a concentration in Child and Family Welfare from Kaplan University.
Emily has lived experience with mental illness, including herself, her son and many family members. Over the years, she learned that there was a lack of services and resources for peers and their families. In her journey with her son, she realized that some people have the passion and compassion to be in the mental health field and some do not. Emily found that she has that passion and compassion within herself and a true understanding of lived experience from many different perspectives and wanted to help others. There are myriad systemic challenges in accessing services in Iowa, but there are also compassionate individuals there to help make the best of a difficult situation.
